Dear friends,
A small lil update from my side in mid summer, I am at the countryside seeing spiderwebs everywhere floating. A connective tissue.
This Saturday I am playing the show ”forever flow of wet long fingers at least some millions touching the lights of one another (love u like e.t)” at a very lovely festival called Nonagon in the north of Sweden that boarders on southern Sapmi, Åarjelsaemien Guovlu. I feel honored to play along side some artists and musicians I have been following for years and are truly admiring such as Theon Cross and Fennesz.
We are playing in an old oilcistern with a reverberation of 25 seconds. Time is lagging there. Stretching. As it must have done in caves before there were clocks. Thinking of oil as fossilized sun energy, as death of the Devonian seas- how we built our whole society on a very specific tragedy.
How about this total goth moment from the show- captured at Norberg festival by Rasmus Erichs Lång
To play this show that I made already back in 2019 feels truly special. Every time I am touched a new, I feel like it is growing with me and taking the shape of wherever in life I find myself. Strings connecting, tearing, stretching, growing, breaking. Our inevitable connections and losses. Loss as a connective tissue.
During this spring I was in Corsica for a residency, I was walking along the cost of the beach for hours, nothing built on the shore in sight. It was just the simple repetition of ocean, waves. Such a meditative experience. A magical thing happened then- the sea was washing up some kind of debris up on the shore, and I noticed it looked like mountains. Over and over, variations of mountain images, and on the other side- mountains stretching for miles. The sea was painting a picture of the mountains that were facing it. All the patterns repeating. Life is always in creation.
I am currently editing a feature film which is on its last stages. Its field recordings from my research I did in China, on the mineral bodies with a perhaps tired but oh so relevant and exploding topic of AI. Whereas there are many questions to what it does with our language and skill, to our imagination and idea of reality, my main focus is on that of its material implications. How we are increasingly becoming reliant on minerals that is extremely costly on the environment to mine. On my website there is a lil page dedicated to it, with excerpt from a text that I wrote for the beautiful book "Slow technology reader"edited by Carolyn W Strauss. Its out now and I am so inspired by it, I read it from cover to cover and it really felt like a companion to think with.
here is from a talk I did online for students of KABK in den Hague with Carolyn and Slow Research Lab.
Other exiting things:
-This summer I am traveling to UK to research different armors in order to build one myself for a future show. Thinking of how we are building physical armors to protect our ideas of personal safety while sacrificing ideas of solidarity.
-In september I am going for a residency to the island of Vis in Croatia for making a movie in relation to one of my favorite films of Chris Marker- La Jetée.
-I am collaborating with a amazing artist and nametwin- Eliel in Finland- growing crystals and doing light design for his show that premiers in Zodiak in Helsinki in October.
-November 13th and 14th I am coming to Gothenburg for the performance lecture ”Heavy Metal Clouds” at Skogen, sharing the eve with the beautiful artist collective Garden Loops, working through posthuman ecologies.
-I started to make algae yarn which are lil slimy beings, don't know what for yet but if anyone wants a dress out of this for a film or waterwedding or something, write me!
Recommendations:
-Nick Cave writes about loss as connective tissue in his beautiful book ”Faith, Hope and Carnage” which is a great read not only on loss and faith but also on creativity and improvisation. Cave tells the story of Kisa Gotami who has lost a child, she goes to Buddha in despair and seeks for help, and he says he will help her, only first, she needs to bring him a mustard seed from a family that hasn't experienced loss. She goes door to door and cannot find any household who has not experienced loss, who did not bury a loved one. Through the experience of universal sorrow and loss and pain- she is no longer isolated in her pain. This is a big question- how do we come together in face of loss rather than experience isolation?
-This absolutely brilliant album and video by Chassol- Big sun.
-One of my favorite writers that helps me navigate these times is L.M Sacasas and his blog The Convivial Society. He writes about AI and art and wonder with companions such as Ivan Illich, Simone Weil and Hannah Arendt. This text called Amulets against the spirits of the age uses phrases and quotations as amulets, for example this one from Arendt: “Ideologies are never interested in the miracle of being.” Read it here.
